Goals vs. Priorities With an Action Plan

I've been mulling over the term "goals" again. When I received this comment yesterday from pieceLove I had to write more about the subject:
I read this book called The Way They Learn and it taught me so much. I am a concrete random thinker, and I think goal setting works against me - I'll leave all that to the sequential thinkers and just keep trying to outrun my own boredom.
I haven't read the book yet, but it's rated extremely high on Amazon.

I have been trying to figure out why the steps in Amy's book "Tell Your Time" work for me. It's essentially writing down goals, however I think the key difference is that it's not random. You create your goals after determining your priorities and how much time you have available in a day. When I decided to set weekly goals I was doomed because I created a to do list (goals) that sounded good to me at that time without thinking about my "envelopes of time" (discussed in the ebook).

Apparently I thought I had 82 hours in a day and thought I should be working every single one of those 82 hours. For those of you with kiddos still at home, your priority during the day is your children.  I don't have kiddos at home during the day so my priority is to spend as much time with them during the afternoon/evening as I can.

When I focus on my to do list instead of my priorities,
my day is messed up!

I will definitely have to read that book. I think it would help me learn a lot about myself and my family. Here is my review of Tell Your Time.
