Frugal Gardening

My frugal gardening tip:

Don't Plant a Garden

Isn't that horrible for me, a frugalite to say? I do not save a penny by planting a garden. In fact, I spend a lot of pennies in order to have a garden. I don't know if it's the area I live in or if it's just me. I love the idea of self sustainability though AND you cannot beat a home grown tomato.

So once again, I'm going to dish out more money so I can move my garden to a sunny location and try my luck again.

Check out MySquareFootGarden for a bunch of wonderful advice! Any other websites you can recommend?

  1. so true lol! i'm doing a very small container garden this year-so far I've got a pot of green onions, and then herb plants-peppermint, mint (don't know if this is different then peppermint), basil, and oregano. I still want to do a few tomato and pepper plants, and maybe one or two raspberry bushes. But it's more for the learning experience with my kids, and not to save money :)

  2. I'm with ya! The years we've had an actual garden we paid more than we would have at the store by the time we had to buy pesticide or lose all the plants.

I guess it all depends on whether you enjoy it or not. I've got a few planters this year myself, but that's about as far as I'll take it. (Personally I'm not a fan of weeding) It's more for the fun of it and the experience for our 3 and a half year old than for anything else.

  3. Frugalites UNITE!!! Glad to hear I'm not alone in this. Every time I see someone say start a garden to save money I have to laugh. That's the first thing I'd quit doing.

Cricket - have you tried Square Foot Gardening? I rarely have to weed because of this layout. However if you don't enjoy it all then I would continue on doing what you're doing for your kiddo!

Sara - I tried container gardening a few years back. Not much success, but it was mostly my cheapness when buying the soil. I will give you a tip though.

If you have green tomatoes when it's going to freeze out, you can pull them in your garage and let them ripen in there. I had some tomatoes get ripe in November (freezes in September here). Don't taste quite as good, but better than storebought.
