Perfectionism

My 14 year old daughter pouts when she doesn't "get" to help me change the sheets on the bed.

Finally, after 18 years of marriage, I finally have more than one set of sheets for my bed. If I could have found decent sheets at a garage sale or thrift store I would have had more than one set years ago.

If' you are thinking "ewwwwwwwwwwww" used sheets - what do you think you are sleeping on when you go to a hotel?

Anyway, it's taken years and much moola to get to the point where I have two different sets of sheets. The fitted sheet matches the flat sheet. Two different sets. Yep, I'm spoiled.

My daughter helped me change my sheets on Sunday. She grabbed a green leaf fitted sheet and a paint splashed light blue sheet. THEY COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY CLASH.

Here's how our conversation went:
  • "Honey you grabbed the wrong sheet...this one doesn't match."
  • "No I didn't Mom, matching sheets are sooooo boring."
  • Gulp. "Ummmm....uhhhhh okay."
The rule as my kids were growing up was that they could choose their clothes to wear as long as it didn't give me a headache. Every night when I go to bed I have a headache...and a big dopey grin on my face as well.

In the grand scheme of things, who cares about matching sheets? If she wants to put ugly sheets on my bed, smiling as she's helping me, why in the world would I care about such a small thing?

Perfectionism. It grabs on and is a little bit hard to let go of.  My tip for this week - ask yourself if it really matters. Time with the kids? Yes, it matters. Homework? Yes, it matters. Sheets on the bed? Nope, not at all.

Wonder what the sheets will look like next week?!??!?!??!!?

Works for me! Check out other tips at We are THAT Family. Check out her new adventure!
