Homemade Taco Seasoning

For years I have tried making homemade taco seasoning to save money. Unfortunately, it's always tasted NASTY. Here's how my life would look:
  1. Buy all the ingredients to make taco seasoning
  2. Ruin one batch of hamburger with yucky taco seasoning
  3. Dump out homemade taco seasoning
  4. Buy new big batch of taco seasoning from Sam's Club
  5. Run out of taco seasoning
  6. Decide that it would be a brilliant idea to make homemade taco seasoning.
  7. Repeat Steps 1-5.
  8. Over and Over again!
I believe I have FINALLY figured out the trick!!!

Buy high quality chili powder. The $.50 jar of stuff from Wal Mart isn't good compared to other chili powder! I found my chili powder at Azure Standard. It was really expensive - I don't know if I'm going to be able to afford it ever again. Are you ready for the price? $2.20 for 4 ounces. okay, I'm joking here. It is more expensive than the chili powder I was buying, but the quality is so.much.better!!!

Here's my "recipe"
  • Boil or Fry 2 pounds of hamburger
  • When done, sprinkle (do not dump like I did) high quality chili powder on top
  • Add to taste whatever else you fancy. I added the following:

    • cumin

    • salt

    • cilantro

    • Italian seasoning

    • Tiny bit of ground red pepper

    • paprika

    • garlic powder

    • onion powder
Honestly, after all of that I think I could have used just the chili powder. It was that good!

  1. I would love to order from Azure...but I need local people to order with and that's where I get stuck. I'll just sit here and be jealous :)

  2. Sometimes, cheap isn't better! That jar of chili powder might look like a bargain, but I wonder what's really in it to make it so cheap. You are right, especially when it comes to spices--pay a little more and get what you pay for!

  3. I've always heard that the more expensive spices are better, I just have a really hard time biting the bullet.

Never thought to add cilantro to my taco seasoning. I might try that next time.

  4. I don't know maybe I put so much other stuff in my seasoning - lots of cumin - that I don't taste the chili powder, hmm, maybe if I had some good stuff it would matter! Next time I will get the good stuff.
