Giving Your Kids Treats

I used to think that eating healthy food meant making everything homemade.

I still believe that you should not eat processed food very often, however I don't think homemade waffles and pancakes are healthy. They are better for you than store bought pancakes or restaurant pancakes, but I wouldn't consider them to be a "health food".  Maybe I'll change my mind again some day, but for me this is the case right now!

A few years ago I would have argued until I was blue in the face that they were healthy. Then two hours after eating my healthy homemade pancakes, I would need to eat again or risk having a hypoglycemic incident. Looking back I had a constant stomach ache too. I had no idea at the time that it hurt because I didn't know what it was like to feel good. Today, I can tell you that grains absolutely kill my stomach. It's not worth it to me to eat them. Some day I'd like to try "preparing them properly" (research Sally Fallon, Nourishing Traditions) but for now, I'm happy having a happy stomach and having constant blood sugar.

Anyway, I've realized through this that my idea of "treats" for myself and my kiddos is totally messed up. I buy them junk food and call it a treat. Really?!? Is it really a treat to eat some garbage?

A true treat would be buying something that was healthy, but too expensive to buy all of the time. For example, I don't buy kiwi often because of the price. My son loves kiwi! Now that would be a treat! My daughter love love loves sugar snap peas. I recently started buying some for her and she's in heaven. I got 5 sugar snap peas out of my garden so I don't think I'll be the one providing them for her!

When I was growing up, my mom and us three girls would share a Coke. I considered that a treat. I guess that's where I get this thinking from. It wasn't really a treat, maybe a rare occurrence?

While we're still eating food that isn't healthy, I have decided to call it what it is. Would you like to have some junk food today?
