"Being" a Christian

How do you know someone is a Christian? Is it because they tell you over and over what the Bible says? Is it because they say "I'm blessed" instead of "I'm lucky"? Is it because they can point to scripture and tell you what to do (AKA Bible Thumper)?

For more years than I can count, I heard and saw the actions of "devout religious" people. People who would go to church several times a week and attended many Bible studies. Then I would see how these same people would treat their family and then tell me everything I did wrong.  I had NO desire to be like those people. I was content to attend church on Sunday and help out occasionally.

Thankfully, that has changed for me after having a pastor who was "real". I finally understand what Jesus did for me. I still don't understand the people who claim to be Christians and were so horrible to their family. But I don't waste my energy on something like that anymore.

Let me tell you what being a Christ follower looks like to me.

My husband.

His friend decided to run a 100 mile race (yep 100 miles). My husband offered to help him out by "pacing" him the last 25 miles. He figured he'd be running with him for about 4 hours starting at 7:00PM last night. After driving a few hours to the place where he was supposed to meet his friend, he ended up starting to "run" at 9:30. He and his friend finished at 3:30 this morning. They walked the last four miles (he hates walking with a passion). Running 25 miles isn't a huge deal for my husband...he races in marathons and finishes in about 3 hours. What is a huge deal is that my husband is so competitive. He didn't "get" or "win" anything for completing this race. He sacrificed hours of his time to help his friend.

Helping a friend with absolutely nothing in it for yourself, is "being" a good example of Christ.

My husband is such a good example of how to follow Christ. He doesn't tell YOU how YOU should live. He doesn't go on and on about Bible verses. It wouldn't even be natural for him to do that. What my husband does is live his life for Christ...he  looks to help people. You won't know he's a Christian by talking to him...you know he's a follower of Christ because of his actions.
