It all started with sour cream. I'm not sure why, but I happened to read all of the ingredients in my sour cream and then compared it to the brand Daisy. Daisy sour cream has just a few ingredients, my "cheapo" sour cream has several ingredients including ones that I cannot pronounce. I started buying Daisy sour cream all of the time. Then I started looking at more items - store brand vs. name brand. I agree that most of the time you can't tell a difference. However, often times I am finding, there are a LOT more ingredients that I can't pronounce in the store brand item.
I also did a taste test between store brand canned tomatoes and Hunt's brand. There's a HUGE difference. Now if you add a bunch of seasonings, you probably wouldn't know it.
Which brings me to my latest discovery. If I wanted to serve bacon to my family, I had to buy two packs or count out the individual pieces of bacon that we could each have. Since I love love love bacon, my poor family didn't get much. It's too tempting for me as I cook it! I picked up our pork last week and made bacon on Sunday morning.
OH.MY.GOODNESS
I'm in love! I made one pack and we have leftovers! It was filling and sooooo good. This bacon at the butcher shop cost $4.50-$5.00 per pound while I pay $2.50 per pound for name brand bacon (Black Label? or something like that).
The moral of the story:
Frugal does not always mean a cheaper product. Make sure you are buying products that have good value! I will admit that back in the day (imagine an 11 year old sighing at this point), I never bought bacon because we simply didn't have the money for it.

I have to agree. There are certain products I buy because the value is worth it, either the taste, the feel, or the longevity of it. I think it takes balance.
ReplyDeleteI agree! There are some products that are just "healthier" than others. I almost always buy juice that is a bit more pricey than the brand name juice because of the high fructose corn syrup. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteOur family LOVES bacon. To make it stretch a bit further I cut the pound into thirds before I cook it. It makes a plateful of bacon seem like more than it is- the kids think they're getting sooo much!! It also fits better in the pan and I can cook more at one time.
