Pseudo Paleo Diet Helps Hypoglycemic Girl

I've been changing the way that we eat. I know I've mentioned it in the past, but now that I've eaten this way for a while I have to share what I've found.

I have no idea how I ended up at Mark's Daily Apple. I spend a lot of time on the Internet researching issues and I happen to stumble across this blog. The people on there are freaks - eating stuff that's going to kill them and make them gain a bunch of weight! They are eating butter, coconut oil, olive oil, meat, eggs, bacon and veggies not necessarily in that order. However, a lot of them are losing weight and finding that it's helped with some of their medical issues.

I follow a bunch of blogs. Women that I respect, but I didn't agree with. I would hear all about Sally Fallon and the book Nourishing Traditions. I kept hearing about soaking your grains. In my mind I kept thinking...if they are really that bad for you, why are we eating them? All the research that I could find pointed to that book.  Well, that's probably how I eventually found Mark's website.

After reading that website and following a lot of links, spending hours researching, I think they are on to something here! Now, I would consider myself a freak.

Here are the main changes I've made:
  • I eliminated most grains from my diet (no, I'm not going to pass up my brownies, thank you very much!)
  • I don't eat things that will spike my blood sugar (corn and potatoes come to mind)
  • I added "good fats" to my diet. A lot more! Previously I believed I was eating healthy because I was eating very little fat.
  • I don't eat sugar very often
  • I stopped drinking milk, but I will eat a little yogurt or heavy whipping cream that is not ultra pasteurized (more junk it it)
  • I stopped eating fruit all by itself.
One day when we were out shopping, I told my husband that I was starting to get hungry. He immediately freaked out (he knows what I used to be like when I was getting hungry). He said "we need to go home and get you something to eat right now!" Instead, we went to Sam's Club and figured if we needed to, I could get something there to eat. When we got back home, my husband was amazed that I was doing okay. I was hungry...like a "normal person" who is hungry. Not the "hypoglycemic hungry" that I've fought for years!

Hypoglycemic Hunger: it's basically hunger at a whole new level. I would get shaky, light headed, dizzy, nauseous, and very very grouchy (my husband will agree with that!) When I did get food, I wouldn't be able to eat much because I was sick to my stomach. I'd eat just a bit of sugar, let that work in my body and then I'd feel good enough to eat more. It's not fun!

Here's another before and after:
Before Pseudo Paleo Diet: I'd have a couple homemade pancakes made with part whole wheat flour and part oats (never any butter or syrup on them) with milk. Two hours later I would HAVE to eat or I'd have said hypoglycemic issues.

After Pseudo Paleo Diet: 8AM I had green beans sauteed in butter for breakfast (real butter). I went on a walk with a friend about 10:00. At noon I thought..."wow I'm sure hungry."

I'm calling it the Pseudo Paleo Diet because there are a list of things that they don't eat and things they believe that I don't. I will definitely continue researching this.

Other items:
  1. I didn't start this lifestyle change (AKA Diet) to lose weight. However, I have lost 8 pounds of my "winter weight".
  2. The bloating and stomach cramps that I assumed were normal are gone. GONE!
  3. Other issues that I won't discuss on my blog, but you can email me if you want more info.
Where do I go from here? I'm still researching many things, but since I've limited my computer time finding that I have more time to focus on one thing at a time. I am 99% convinced that coconuts are not evil because they are a different kind of saturated fat than Crisco. However, I couldn't explain it to anyone. I'm gaining more knowledge and more confidence every day.

By the way, I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on t.v. I have no idea if this is a healthy diet for YOU. For me, the results have been outstanding. Research for yourself and see if there is anything you should change in your diet so you can be healthy!

I hope these tips help you! Chek out more tips at Works for Me Wednesday.

P.S. Gumby has absolutely nothing to do with this post, but isn't that picture ADORABLE? We love Gumby!

  2. We just recently started cutting out just about all grains as well, after first going full force with the nourishing traditions ways. My husband is pretty much all "paleo/primal" but we do give ourselves a break when it comes to eating special meals and usually a once-a-week cheat meal. Too bad I had JUST bought 50 lbs of wheat berries and 25lbs of brown rice. *sigh* Time to start baking for others, right? :) But we have noticed some weight loss (my husband has lost 15lbs already, combined with lots of exercise too) and we feel better too...

  3. I just discovered MDA this year! Such a well-written blog. I love all of the sources and citations, but still with an appeal to the layman. I finally made the decision to go without sugar and grains last week - hit a major wall with headaches, then the next morning woke up home free. I feel like I'm back in control of my appetite (and not the other way around!). Good luck to you with your quasi-paleo endeavors! :-) - A. (of the Redemption Unlimited Girls)

  4. That's quite a radical change! How long did it take to adjust? Or are you still adjusting?

  5. Jb - I'm not adjusting at all...I've got a bit of a compulsive nature, so when I decide to do something it's fairly easy. I feel SOOOOO much better than I can't even imagine wanting to eat a ton of grain.

I'm glad I'm not alone in this!

I *almost* stocked up on beans, rice and flour from Azure Standard. So thankful that I didn't! Hopefully you'll be able to donate it somewhere!
