Cold Cereal Alternative

I'm not looking for grocery store deals on cold cereal anymore. For a while I was able to print some coupons off of the Internet so I could have a variety of cereal on hand. My husband doesn't care that much about having a big variety because I make breakfast so often.

Apparently my kids don't want to eat cereal as often because I'm not buying "the good kinds" (meaning a variety of cereal, I rarely bought the all sugar kinds). They'll happily eat anything else as long as I don't make them eat the mini wheats and cheerios! I wouldn't even buy those, but my husband LOVES cereal!

Lately I've been making a lot of homemade "sausage", yogurt and granola. Then once a week I make peanut butter oatmeal. I don't always eat breakfast type food in the morning. I'll eat leftovers or egg salad as well.

Here's my frugal tip: If you are trying to cut back on the amount of money you spend on cereal, buy cereal that your kids don't like and offer something else.

  1. Great tip :) We also switched to homemade granola, although I got a few boxes of plain cornflakes on sale, so we've got those as backup.

I'm off to check your sausage recipe.

  2. BTW, in a pinch, you can eat raw oats mixed with milk or yogurt. I've only done it with quick cooking oats. I've got stomach issues, so I thought it might be problematic, but it didn't affect me at all. I wouldn't do it too often, but honestly, you couldn't tell they were raw.

  3. I have a recipe for granola that uses ground up dates and bananas as sweetener. I love it!

  4. Debbie - I've used raw oatmeal overmilk and it's delicious! I can eat oatmeal by the spoonful!

Jb - I haven't tried dates before. That's on my list of things to try!

  5. I love your tip for keeping the kids from eating too much cereal. It is hilarious! What Husband and I do to reduce cereal costs is to mix 2 like cereals, one from cheap from Sam´s club like corn flakes with something tastier, like Honey Bunches of Oats when it goes on sale. Works for us!

  6. We love that Peanut Butter Oatmeal recipe too! Sometimes I make it with bananas and then and peanut butter while it's still warm from the oven -- the peanut butter melts and it's really yummy. Did you know you can ct it into squares and freeze it too?

  7. Our family loves homemade granola. We add berries and yogurt sometimes for a special treat. I must admit, when I fist read your post, I though you made sausage yogurt. Yuck!! I cannot describe the relief I felt when I discovered the comma between the two! :)
