Frugal - Buying in Bulk

Many people know that it's not always a good deal to buy in bulk. You have to look at the individual price per ounce, pound or "thing". I realized something new while comparing prices last month.

It's cheaper for me (per ounce) to buy Ranch dressing mix in bulk at Sam's Club than it is to buy the little individual packets. However, it's not a good deal for my family because I'm trying not to use that spice mix in my recipes anymore. I have several recipes that call for it and I add in some extra seasonings (garlic powder, Italian dressing, salt, etc) so I don't have to use the ranch seasoning mix.

I will still buy the packets so I can make semi-homemade ranch dressing. I know you can make it without buying a mix, but I've never had any success. I have found a ranch dressing recipe that we like that only calls for 1 tsp per batch of ranch.

One less bulk item thing to have in my home and I'll be less tempted to add this to my food. Who knows, maybe some day I'll find a recipe that I like that doesn't call for any ranch dressing mix!

  1. I love the flavor, but it's a shock to my wallet. :)I think I have just a couple of recipes that call for it. I bought it once in bulk and we never finished the container so it isn't a good deal for my family either.
